Excellent at telling stories in her songs and able to imbue her music with incredible strength, Blige’s debut album made sure her fans were desperate for more from her. Released in 1992, Blige’s first album "What's the 411?" proved that she was a force to be reckoned with. Blige caught the eye of Sean Combs and the man that was known as Puff Daddy at the time produced most of her debut album. Initially hired as a backup singer, Mary J. Thankfully for her, the boyfriend of Blige’s mother at the time managed to play her recording for the singer Jeff Redd and he passed it on to the president and CEO of Uptown Records. Continuing to perform throughout her childhood, Blige’s career took off after she recorded a cover of Anita Baker’s “Caught Up in the Rapture” on a lark.
